definition of equidistant

The concept of equidistant is used in our language with the mission of indicate to what equidistant, that is, to that point or element, among others, that for example is at the same distance from each other with respect to others. Our houses are equidistant from the city center.

One of the expressions that we use the most to refer to what is expressed is equal distance, that is, equidistant and equal distance are synonymous. Of course, in colloquial language it is more usual to use the second expression while in other contexts such as math, it is more common to use the term at hand.

Wide use in fields such as mathematics, geometry and technical drawing

By case, in areas such as those mentioned mathematics, geometry, drawing, among others, it is common to hear talk of equidistant to express the point, the line, that is at the same distance from another point or line.

In mathematics, the equidistant point will be the same distance from two points that are at opposite ends.

On the other hand, for geometry, which, as we have already said, also uses the concept recurrently, equidistant, it is a point from which it is possible to divide a segment into two equal parts, that is, we will achieve two exact halves. Meanwhile, it is through this equidistant point that the bisecting line that cuts it in two will pass.

The figure of the circumference is the best exponent of the equidistance since all its points are equidistant from the center of it.

Other uses, in the reference of places and ideological positions

The word is also often used outside of these exact science and discipline contexts to indicate that place that is located halfway with respect to two points that are taken as reference. Let's meet in the shopping center that is equidistant from your house and mine.

And we also usually attribute a symbolic meaning to the word when you want indicate that something, a position, an ideological position, to cite an example, is, as is popularly said, halfway between two antagonistic proposals, such as between a progressive and a conservative one.
