definition of quadrilateral

A quadrilateral is a geometric figure with one characteristic: it is made up of four sides. The different quadrilaterals that exist depend on the lengths of the sides and the amplitudes of the angles.

Every quadrilateral is a polygon and as a geometric figure we can observe it around us in very different realities: a football field, a sheet of paper, the television screen, some kites or a simple table.

The basic form of every quadrilateral is the square, which is present in very diverse disciplines: urbanism, agriculture or architecture. From a psychological point of view, the concept of a square conveys the idea of something closed, finished and perfect, which implies a sense of security (this psychological aspect is relevant for the design of any object). The shape of this geometric figure is based on the mathematical concept of the right angle, a spatial conception that allows us to understand the world in an orderly way. This idea is evident in the Cartesian axis system, a quadrangular graphic representation that is the fundamental instrument for ordering space and movement.

Quadrilateral classification

The different shapes they present depend on the number of pairs of parallel sides that each one has. In this way, the square has four parallel sides, as does the rectangle. the rhombus and the rhomboid, all of them being parallelograms. Instead, there are quadrilaterals that are not parallelograms, such as the isosceles trapezoid, the right trapezoid or the scalene trapezoid (all of them are known as trapezoids and do not have pairs of parallel sides).

Ring and boxing

Boxing is a sport already practiced by the Greeks in the ancient Olympic games (it was known as pygmachia, which means fighting with the fists). Modern boxing emerged in Britain in the 18th century. In some territories they boxed in a circular enclosure and therefore the place of the fight was called ring, which in English means ring. This custom evolved and the space became a ring, but the term ring is still used. In this way, in the world of boxing, ring and quadrilateral are synonymous, although these terms refer to totally different geometric figures.

In boxing terminology there is a very characteristic expression: "get into the ring." It means going to fight but incorporates a special connotation, since it implies assuming the challenge of facing another fighter, both having the purpose of defeating the opponent.
