Social

definition of misogyny

The concept of misogyny is a social concept that is used to designate that attitude by which a person shows hatred or contempt for the female gender. Although the term is generally applied to men, in some situations it can also be applied to women who move with an attitude of contempt or contempt for their gender peers. Misogyny is an attitude that men have exercised over women since time immemorial, that is, from the moment when the human being began to organize as a community and women began to occupy weaker roles in terms of hierarchy. Today, despite all the advances that modern society can represent, misogyny still exists very strongly.

The term misogyny comes from the Greek, language for which the suffix miseo means to hate or despise and gyné means woman or feminine (other words such as gynecology also derive from this). The misogynist or misogynist is that individual who exercises contempt for women, and criticizes, hates and despises not only the attitudes that women specifically can have in particular circumstances but also their permanent role within society.

Misogyny is a common problem today and is not only observed in more conservative societies such as those in the Middle East, but also in those that are normally seen as more progressive, that is, those in the West. The mistreatment of women may be officially punished or sanctioned by law but this does not always mean that in practice women do not receive mistreatment, contempt, abuse or neglect not only from men but also from their gender peers. The contempt or mistreatment can be verbal (such as attacking the woman through speech or communication) as well as physical (for example sexual abuse) or psychological (for example, from permanent contempt for the actions that a woman can take to cape).
