The term sea is used mostly to designate, on the one hand, to that mass of salty water that is smaller in size than the ocean, but also with the same word is called the set of the mass of salty water that covers most of the planet earth, including in it the smaller seas and oceans.
Likewise, some large lakes, which of course exceed the corresponding average, to be called as such, are popularly known by the term seas, in fact the formal name they bear is that of closed or inland sea, for example, the Caspian Sea, the Dead Sea, the Aral Sea.
The preceding distinction on the seas and the rest of those that exist and that are what allow us to distinguish and speak of various types of seas, will be determined and will have to do with the contact they have with the ocean, and they may be open. or closed, according to whether they are totally surrounded by land or not, as is the case with the Black Sea or the Continental Sea.
So there are three major categories of seas ... the coastal or coastal seas, which are those very large and open, are not separated from the oceans but differ from these by being less deep, by the amplitude of their tides and the high temperature of its waters. On the other hand, the continental seas and as their name anticipates, are located within the continents and communicate with the oceans through a shallow strait. The main difference with the previous ones is that their tides show a low amplitude.
And finally, the inland or closed seas, briefly mentioned at the beginning of the review, occupy extensive endorheic depressions and, as we mentioned, correspond to very large lakes.
A curiosity about the term is that although its name is generally more widespread in masculine terms, seafarers, such as fishermen and all those who dedicate their life and work to him and poets, usually attribute to the term when they are they refer to him, the female gender, the sea, instead of the sea, as we all say mostly.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is the body that understands the most about seas and also the highest authority when it comes to defining them and on the other hand, for those who the sea is a place of pleasure, joy and rest and want to celebrate with him for so many joys and good moments lived and provided, I tell you that the world maritime day is celebrated every August 26.
On the other hand and without having anything to do with the great masses of water, but if taking from it the question of the immensity that characterizes the seas, the word sea is also usually used to refer to the abundance of something.
