definition of fragmentation

The concept of fragmentation It is used in our language when it is wanted to indicate that in certain context, social group, or even in society itself, there is a division, a division into different parts, due to the situation.

A clear example of this type of division can be seen in those societies in which at the political level there is a polarization between two sectors or political proposals. Of course, on one side there will be those who defend a position if it is official or that is the one that governs, and on the other, those who fight or criticize it. Meanwhile, this strong division will allow us to speak, diagnose, a context of fragmentation in said society.

Normally this state of affairs leads to the disintegration or rupture of the space in question, since coexistence in that framework, where so many differences and oppositions persist, is certainly impossible for the group or community in question to develop normally.

It does not usually happen all the time, but it is usual that in cases like the one described above, this state of affairs results in acts of concrete violence between those who think differently. For this very reason, a scene of fragmentation is certainly dangerous and threatening to peace and social harmony.

But the concept of fragmentation also has other common uses in other contexts, such is the case of the one that is attributed to the instances of the sexual reproduction since it designates a very common asexual reproduction methodology. This type of reproduction consists in that a developed organism is capable of detaching a cell from it and from it and after the succession of various processes it is possible to generate a completely new organism that is genetically the same as the one from which it comes.

This type of reproduction turns out to be very common in simple organisms, among them we can mention: starfish or the earthworm.

And where this concept is also being used extensively is at the request of the ecology and from environmental care to name that process that is characterized by containing violent environmental changes and that will be decisive for the correct and normal development of biology and the conservation of the environment in general. We can cite as concrete examples human activity and geological processes.
