definition of oasis

Areas in deserts where vegetation and water springs abound

It is designated by the term of oasis to those remote areas that present abundant vegetation, or sometimes even water springs and that are located in the middle of extremely sandy deserts, such as those existing in the Asian, African or American continents.

Origin and characteristics

The process of wind erosion is one of the fundamental causes of the appearance of oases.

They are mainly characterized by allowing the development of settlements that are dedicated to cultivation and also turn out to be a supply point for neighboring towns and those travelers eager for a place that offers rest and water. Oases can be found in the Arabian peninsula or in the popular Sahara Desert.

In the geography of the oasis it is common to find the so-called date palm, which is precisely a plant that adapts to the very high temperatures that are usually found in deserts. Meanwhile, and through planting and irrigation techniques that have been introduced in these areas, it is possible to cultivate species such as chickpeas, peanuts, onions, beans, citrus fruits and peaches in the oases.

Oasis, today and yesterday

In the American case, the oasis known as the Huacachina lagoon stands out, located about five kilometers west of the Peruvian city of Ica. Its geography stands out for its incredible emerald waters, the dream of any Bedouin who passes through the place needing some fresh water. Around the waters there is a lush vegetation composed of eucalyptus and huarango trees.

It is undoubtedly one of the attractions of Peru for the beauty of its landscape and the most famous oasis in America.

We must say by the way that deserts are sandy territories in which, as a consequence of the scarce possibility of rain, there is very little or practically no vegetation and the same happens with water, for example, it is that oases, which are in the middle of these territories offer visitors and residents the possibility of making their stay or transit through these places more bearable.

In the past, when crossings through the desert turned out to be much more common and arduous than they are today, oases enjoyed vital importance, even more so, in some extreme cases of fatigue and also due to the effects of heat and humidity. Luminosity, travelers, have mistaken oases for optical illusions or mirages.

The Oases of ancient Egypt turn out to be the most famous and popular, which have even been immortalized and represented in hundreds of movies; those of Dakel, Siwa and El Jariyá They were well known for providing both food and fresh drinks to those Bedouin caravans arriving from different parts of the African continent.

Refuge or paradise in the face of daily obligations

Respecting the same sense that the word formally presents, in everyday language it is also frequent that we find it, but to refer not to those remote places in the middle of the desert where vegetation and water abound, but to account for what is for us a refuge or a break from the different setbacks and obligations to which our daily life is exposed. "This square turns out to be an oasis in the middle of the chaos of the big city." "The cafe on the way back from the faculty is an oasis, there is no shouting or noise, calm and ambient music predominate."

English pop rock band formed by the Gallagher brothers

On the other hand, the word Oasis has a very special meaning in the field of contemporary music since in this way it is called a popular English rock band, born in the early nineties, in the city of Manchester and that due to its enormous popularity and sales record reminded the fantastic the Beatles, also originating from those payments.

The main peculiarity of the band is that its leaders are two brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who in addition to their artistic quality have managed to occupy the front pages of the newspapers for their recurring fights in the best Tom and Jerry style.

It was precisely the constant fights between the brothers that marked the end of the group and its consequent dissolution. In 2009 Noel decided to leave the group and although Liam decided to continue without him the project would only last one more year and finally in 2010 the band was diluted.

Beyond these domestic issues, Oasis, marked a milestone in pop rock music in recent decades and not only took millions of dollars into its pockets selling some 80 million copies of its albums but also left a fabulous legacy of beautiful songs for all.
