definition of remuneration

The term remuneration is used to refer to everything that a person receives as payment for a job or activity performed. Today, the idea of remuneration is almost exclusively limited to the payment of a sum of money in exchange for a job and due to the complexity of societies, it is more or less established in most cases what type of remuneration corresponds to each job depending on the number of hours you need, the training or professionalization of the same, the risks that this activity implies, the duration, etc.

We could say that the most common synonym of the word remuneration is salary. This is so since in common and everyday language the second option is usually used more than the first, relegated more than anything to much more formal legal and work spaces. However, they both refer to the same thing.

Compensation is something that is generally, in most cases, set before work is done. In this way, the person who is hired can decide in advance if it suits him or not according to the payment he receives in return. However, when jobs are not blank or regular, many times the remuneration or payment can change during or at the end of the job, which can mean a significant and almost ethical problem for the worker. In other cases, the remuneration is not entirely fixed, which is why it may vary even to the conscience of the worker (for example, when performing jobs such as masonry, plumbing, electricity, which vary greatly from case to case).

It is important to note that with the complexity of urban and industrial societies, the need to regularize and control the remuneration of the working sectors became increasingly important. Thus, in most countries there is labor legislation that is used to determine the right of the worker to claim for fair remuneration according to the work performed, the amount of hours that must be paid, the payment of overtime or even to the idea of equal pay for equal work that serves to defend the rights of women, perhaps not recognized until recently, against the work of men.
