definition of diligent

If a person performs an activity efficiently, quickly and responsibly, we are dealing with a diligent person. Usually this adjective is used to describe the skill and attitude of someone in their profession. However, it can be used to refer to a student or any individual who performs an action with care and dedication.

A diligent professional is one who does his job well from a procedural and technical point of view and, at the same time, acts responsibly and without wasting time.

Diligence is a virtue

When we do something there are almost always two possible options: do it carefully and as well as possible or with reluctance, apathy and without too much precision. From a moral point of view, the virtue of diligence has several dimensions:

1) the person acts correctly because he understands that it is his responsibility and his duty,

2) the diligent attitude is a way to combat laziness and

3) Enthusiasm is a fundamental ingredient of diligence, because if you don't really want to do things right, things end up going wrong.

As a general rule, the diligent person has a high sense of duty, is scrupulous with details, adopts a positive attitude, asks if he or she does not know how to do something, and is eager to learn new things. These qualities are normally accompanied by high personal motivation. Obviously, laziness, reluctance, or lack of rigor are the opposite of diligence.

Typical phrases of not very diligent people

"I'll do it tomorrow" (these types of statements reveal a tendency to procrastinate, that is, postpone things for another time)

"I leave at three and not a minute more" (for some, fulfilling their obligations consists of doing what a contract says literally).

"I'm not going to complicate my life doing things that are not necessary" (this phrase is a clear example of the law of least effort).

"I am not paid to be happy at work" (in no contract is it written that it is mandatory to be happy and with a good disposition, but it is clear that a positive personal attitude should be part of any activity).
