definition of quarrelsome

A quarrelsome person is someone who has a penchant for confrontations, fights and squabbles, whether in the form of heated arguments or through violent actions. Keep in mind that a dispute is a fight, that is, an altercation.

Brawlers in fiction

In the novel, the comic or the cinema there are usually characters prone to violence and, therefore, quarrelsome. They are usually the hero's antagonists. Thus, the hero and the brawler become two human archetypes on which a plot develops. Obviously, the quarrel represents evil and the hero is good. This general outline of fiction has been present throughout human history.

In real life

The term quarrelsome is clearly derogatory. When using this word, it is usually referred to someone from the underworld or who is part of a mafia. It can also refer to an offender who uses violence to commit criminal acts or the individual who gets into trouble with some frequency. The brawler can be a provocateur, a bully, a noisemaker, a pimp or a bully. Consequently, he is the antithesis of the calm and peaceful individual.

The brawler from the point of view of psychology

If someone has an impulse for violent acts, it is very likely that they have some type of antisocial conduct disorder and, more specifically, psychopathy. People with this profile have a psychological problem and pose a danger to themselves and to society. This does not mean that all quarrels have some conduct disorder, but there is no doubt that certain violent attitudes are a symptom of some pathology.

Violent behaviors have been studied by psychology and there are a series of personality traits that generally have a direct relationship with the pendency, such as irritability, emotional instability, the absence of feelings of remorse or guilt.

The quarrelsome behaviors can manifest themselves in childhood and this is what happens with the children who intervene in fights in a habitual way or who have aggressive behaviors. These behaviors should be a wake-up call for parents and educators, who have the obligation to redirect this type of antisocial behavior. Otherwise, a child with a tendency to violence is likely to turn into a quarrelsome adult.
