definition of vocation

By vocation, on the one hand, it will designate the inclination that an individual has to undertake a certain career, profession or any other type of activity in life: teacher, doctor, lawyer, journalist, firefighter, carpenter, among others.

Professional vocation

In some cases it may be that this special desire arises spontaneously during the first years of the person's life, which even if they do not understand it or know how to see it due to a question of age, in any case, due to attitudes, behaviors and some preferences, will reveal their inclination. towards a profession. For example, when children play ball almost all day and this game represents all their joys and moments, then surely that boy will say that in the future he wants to become a footballer, or those around him will say that he should. Although, it may happen that this inclination does not arise in childhood and that, on the contrary, it develops through experiences and knowledge that arrived in adolescence and there you only decide to undertake this or that activity for the rest of your life.

Although mostly during high school, a step prior to completing undergraduate studies, people elucidate their professional orientation that will lead them precisely to enroll in this or that career, it is not so easy for everyone to discover what their vocation is. Sometimes there are indications but not sufficiently ingrained for the person to feel completely determined to embark on a professional path.

Vocational test

Also, it is very common that when this inclination does not arise spontaneously, people go to a specialist, generally a psychologist, who will be in charge of revealing through various questionnaires and methods, what is the main inclination that that person has to develop and that he still couldn't see her. Formally they are known as vocational tests and it is usual, then, that in the last years of secondary school those students who have not decided on a career or trade are submitted to them, in order to discover their interests and thus guide them.

The vocational test is basically a test that will inquire about different aspects of the person in order to make it easier to understand their interests, aptitudes, abilities, study habits, preferences and characteristics, among others. In addition, they facilitate the obtaining of information that will be vital when making a future decision.

Now, it is worth noting that a test does not determine the career to be studied, that decision is the responsibility of the interested party, they must be taken as a kind of guide that can be followed to learn more, especially in those cases in which there is doubt or confusion about what you want.

These tests are not infallible and many times some personal characteristics of the person can be overlooked and lead to a wrong conclusion.

Family pressure, a lousy career counselor

How many times have we heard: Juan is a doctor like his father, Mario is a judge like his mother, María is a nurse like her grandmother, right? Many, surely and this has to do with the fact that in a good part of the decisions about which profession to follow, it is the family that drives them through comments or pressure and ends up twisting the balance towards their interest, regardless of the genuine inclinations of the interested party. Undoubtedly there will be many doctors out there who wanted to be astronauts but their family forced them with arguments such as: "we must continue with the family medical tradition", "with that job you will not achieve economic stability", among others, and finally they ended up giving in.

Fortunately today, although cases such as those just mentioned continue to exist, they are less and less since the young people of these times tend to be more sincere with their wishes and preferences and make them prevail over all things, including family mandates. In past times, for a matter of customs it was less common for a son to confront the designs of his father, who was considered not to be contradicted in any way.

Religious vocation

At the instigation of religion we find ourselves with the religious vocation, which is the type of vocation felt by those people of deep religious faith who want to dedicate, consecrate, their lives completely to God and to the dissemination of his doctrine. The individual who wants to become a religious, priest or nun, must take the vows, but before and as a preparation, he will enter a community or seminary to study and train.
