definition of medieval

The medieval term is used as an adjective to refer to all those events, phenomena, individuals or objects that have taken place in the historical period of Humanity known as the Middle Ages. Happened between the V and XV centuries of our era, the period of the Middle Ages, Middle Ages or medieval was one of the longest in history and was characterized by very peculiar features and elements that allow it to be defined relatively easily. The events that are traditionally used as the beginning and end of this period are respectively the fall of the Western Roman Empire (year 476), and the fall of Constantinople (year 1453) or the discovery of America (year 1492).

Among the main medieval or Middle Ages characteristics we must mention the more or less ordered formation of the Romano-Germanic kingdoms that arose as a result of the fall of the Roman Empire in the West. These kingdoms would be characterized by developing their own national identities with elements such as language, history, traditions and legislation, many of them still in force.

On the other hand, medieval economics was based on the breakdown of the powerful trading system developed by the Romans. In the same way, the famous feudal lordships were established that were self-sufficient (they consumed what was produced in them) and that were organized around agriculture and the exploitation of the land. In these manors, the different social hierarchies that made the feudal lords were at the top of the social pyramid were eventually delineated. The base of it was made up of servants.

Finally, the medieval period was also deeply characterized by the importance and centrality of religion. In the case of Europe, Christianity was not only a religious system, but also a complex structure of regulation and social organization through its highest institution: the Church. Other religions such as Islam were also of great importance at this time.
