costume definition

Considered one of the most important parts of dramatic art, costumes are those whose main function is to dress and decorate the different characters according to the particular vision of the directors and / or writers of the play. The costumes are essentially made up of all those costumes, dresses and clothes that characterize the characters in the work in question and that help to generate a more complete idea of what is being represented. Nowadays, costumes are considered such an important section for acting representation that they are always included in awards and honors ceremonies.

From the earliest forms of dramatic representation of history, costumes have always been an essential part of the works or artistic expressions that took place. Since Ancient Greece, artists always had to have some minimal costume detail that coincided with the spirit of the character to be represented and that helped to generate a more complete idea of the fictional situation. In Modernity, the art of dramatic costumes became more and more complex, creating entire sets of costumes for characters, who had to alternate their dresses numerous times in the same work depending on the situation.

Today, costume design can alternate between period creations (that is, more or less finished representations of the clothing of the era in which the story is set) and costume creations that are current but are undoubtedly chosen. For any special reason. The costumes can go unnoticed in the eyes of the spectators. However, its presence is always of great importance even in cases in which it does not speak of a period wardrobe since it is yet another element that serves to define the character and allow the viewer to find a meaning to the work.

In some cases, period costumes can require impressive investments, as well as incredible designs and months of work since they are usually very complicated, delicate and artistic. At the same time, postmodern plays can demonstrate disinterest in traditional costume forms and break away from them by dressing their characters in rags and dirty clothes.
