definition of grassland

Pasture is called that area of land that is characterized by the presence of abundant grass. These ecosystems in which herbs that grow wild are abundant can be natural or the result of human creation to raise livestock, feed cows, sheep, among others, or have a recreational or sports motivation.

Grassland classes

Much of our planet is covered precisely by grasslands that can present different characteristics and this has allowed a classification into the following types of grasslands: prairies, pampas, steppes, savannah, plains, among others.

In the meadows and steppes there is a varied vegetation and the climate is characterized by presenting a very cold season and an extremely warm one.

And the sheet combines grassland with some tree species. Dryness predominates, being halfway between the desert and the jungle. They predominate in the tropics.

Soil and climate characteristics affect its development

The development of these ecosystems is closely linked to the prevailing climatic situation and also to the singularities of the soil. Although grasslands are lands in which there is abundant water, they are capable of living in times of absence of rain and cold weather.

Pasture for livestock and recreation

The cultivated pastures are those that man develops with various motivations. The meadow is the quintessential place where cattle are raised and fed. It is characterized by being a flat terrain with very little relief. It is characteristic of humid and not so cool areas and in which there is practically no drought. In them then the cattle activity is mainly developed and as a consequence of this is that the land is usually intervened with fertilization and amendments to keep it always according to its purposes.

For its part, the dehesa is another type of pasture modified by man dedicated to raising cattle and also for the production of firewood.

And the lawn is one of the most popular grasslands that is used for ornamental purposes in gardens and squares, and also in some spaces to develop sports activities, such is the case of rugby and soccer.
