definition of travel agency

A travel agency is a private company that acts as an intermediary between its clients and certain suppliers of the travel industry, such as airlines, hotels, cruises, among others, offering the first better contracting conditions on the trips they wish to undertake.. That is, the travel agency sells to its client products and services related to the trip that they will make at a lower price and within the framework of really tempting and attractive conditions with respect to what they could get if they were to buy it directly in the listed providers.

This type of company better expresses its usefulness when it comes to having to contract extensive trips abroad, since they take care of simplifying the client's procedures with the corresponding foreign companies, in addition to solving issues such as accommodation and tourist guide in the cities they visit.

In other words, the travel agency will not only sell the corresponding plane ticket but also offer a much more complete and comprehensive service that includes hotels, tickets for urban transport, car rental, among other alternatives.

The travel agency market is varied and therefore we can find three types of travel agencies: operators (They organize the trips by contracting directly with the service operators), wholesalers (They offer and distribute tourism products through retail agencies, they are generally not contracted by the final consumer and they usually make reservations to meet the demands of retailers) and retailers (those that directly sell their services to the final consumer).

Although the growth of the internet considerably reduced their work since many airlines began to sell tickets directly to customers and therefore it was no longer necessary to pay commissions to agencies for carrying out this work, considerably reducing their income, the travel agencies, however, managed to survive the internet phenomenon by fully joining it and publishing detailed information on the trips they sell there.

Cox & Kings turns out to be the oldest travel agency in the world, created in 1758 on England with the motivation of planning group religious excursions.
