definition of subdue

Subduing is the act of dominating someone through some form of coercion. In Spanish, the verb subjugate presents diverse synonyms, such as subjugate, submit or dominate.

An analysis of the meaning of the term

The word subdue is formed by the prefix so, which means under, and to judge. Apparently, to subjugate means to judge something inappropriately, since the prefix does not suggest that there is an unfair judgment. This interpretation is not correct, since it starts from a misunderstanding: it equates judgment and justice. Actually, in the case at hand, judging comes from iugum, that is, yoke (the yoke symbolizes the idea of oppression). Consequently, if we pay attention to the true etymology of the word subjugate, it is the same as putting someone under some yoke.

Subdue in the sphere of politics

In political activity there is a genuine element: power. If power is exercised democratically and with the inspiration of noble ideas, the people who abide by the norms imposed by those who rule (those who exercise power) do not have to feel subjugated or oppressed, since the norms that are imposed are legitimized by the citizen vote. However, if the people are subject to the absolute or totalitarian power of their rulers, it is feasible to speak of a subjugated people.

Different ways to subdue a people

If we analyze the different ways in which peoples have been subjected throughout history, we find all kinds of strategies. Then we make a brief tour of some of them.

In the ancient world the peoples were subjugated through the invasion of the territory and this phenomenon has been maintained over time through conquests or imperialism. In political terms, tyranny, despotism, absolutism or totalitarianism are different versions of the same idea, a people is subjected by the use of violence.

Another way to understand the subjugation of a people is through the use of terrorism.

Through terror in its various forms, some groups have tried to silence citizens in order to impose ideas by force.

The purpose of subjugating or subduing a people is not always associated with violence, as more subtle mechanisms are sometimes used, such as information propaganda, populist speeches or campaigns against some minorities or ethnic groups.
