The term seriousness has two meanings. On the one hand, it expresses a person's lack of joy and, on the other, the responsible attitude towards something.
We say that someone is serious when they do not express satisfaction with normality. Seriousness is usually seen in an individual's facial gesture, tone of voice, and style. The serious demeanor may be due to low vital optimism, shyness, or it may be a trait that is caused by a temporary situation. This personality trait is typical of reserved people, little outgoing or inclined to pessimism in some of its forms (sadness, melancholy, nostalgia, bitterness, etc).
As it is an assessment based on external appearance or some indications, it does not always correspond to the true character. In fact, behind the serious gesture there may be someone funny and with a sense of humor, so their seriousness is external and apparent.
Seriousness as an attitude of personal responsibility manifests itself in relation to daily obligations. If someone fulfills his commitments, is punctual, does not make excuses and is honest, it is said that he is a serious person. Their seriousness is considered socially as a virtue and, therefore, these types of individuals are valued when performing obligations at work or in any other area.
Little seriousness
To say that someone or something is not serious means that it is valued negatively, that it does not inspire confidence and that it generates little credibility.
There are many ways to be unserious. Probably the main one is the contradiction between what is said and what is done. People who are false, hypocritical or who change their minds easily are classified as not serious. In a very similar way, if a project does not have sufficient foundation, it can also be considered in this way.
The consideration of little seriousness has a danger: that it is based on a personal prejudice. This is what happens to the look of some people who have tattoos, a different haircut, and an unconventional style. Their appearance is sometimes confused and they are described as not very serious simply because of some external characteristics, which are not related to their level of responsibility or their degree of commitment. In equal measure, formality in dress and physical appearance are indications of someone serious and confidence-inspiring. In conclusion, it is appreciated that the estimation of seriousness is complex and that it can easily lead us to deception.
