definition of oligophrenic

By oligophrenic we understand that person who is characterized by suffering from the pathology or mental illness of oligophrenia. The oligophrenia is a pathology that supposes the pronounced mental deficiency that prevents the person from developing a normal intellectual, emotional and rational level according to the scientifically accepted parameters for each age range. This means that an oligophrenic person can reach the ages of an adult but still maintain an intellectual or rational level of a child of 4 or 5 years.

The term oligophrenia comes from the Greek: oligo means little (as in the term oligarchy), while phren means mind, inner and the suffix ia means quality. Thus formed, this medical concept then represents the low-mind or low-intelligence quality that a person possesses.

The oligophrenic person is a person who unfortunately does not manage to develop his brain to a normal level, his brain and cognitive capacities remain below the parameters accepted by medicine. The oligophrenic is usually born already with these characteristics that can be inherited by previously existing tendencies in a relative or by some abnormal condition of the development of the fetus during pregnancy. Here it is important to mark then that the period in which the baby remains in the mother's womb is of vital significance to determine the anatomical, cognitive and emotional qualities that the child will develop throughout his life.

Oligophrenia is a permanent condition that can be treated to try to give the person who suffers it a better quality of life. However, it is not a condition or pathology that has a cure since the person who has it has a lower than normal development of their mental capacities, a development that if not achieved at the right time does not recover later. It is also important to note, as mentioned, that the mental disability that oligophrenia represents or represents is not, therefore, caused by environmental agents, by neglect in education or nutrition, etc.
