definition of multicultural

Nation or territory in which several cultures coexist

It is said that this or that Nation is multicultural when more than one people coexist in it, that is, its own, native, plus the others that have been annexed over the years as a result of immigration and that certainly have also been integrated into the life and customs of the country or geographic environment in question.

A phenomenon that grows in cosmopolitan cities

This multicultural phenomenon has gone in crescendo more and more in the nations and it also turns out to be very simple observation and detection, since it will only be necessary to observe, contemplate, any different or striking event that occurs anywhere in the world and see the people who attend it, or are involved, to check this question.

For example, in most of the tragedies that we have unfortunately witnessed in recent years, it was a recurring event to find people of different origins involved in them, for example, in the attack perpetrated against the Twin Towers eight years ago in which Thousands of people were murdered, there were individuals of purely American origin of course, but the death of a thousand people belonging to other origins and peoples was also recorded. This obviously is a faithful sample of the multicultural world in which we are living and precisely the city of New York is one of the cities on the planet that is ahead in that sense of housing people who come from different cultures.

In fact, we must say that this does not happen only with the city of New York alone but that it is a characteristic shared by many important metropolises on the world map. In Madrid, in London, in Mexico, to name a few examples, you can see how multicultural many parts of our world have become.

A sample of freedom and openness that enriches

Of course, giving space and prominence to people from other cultures and nations shows and speaks of the freedom that the country that shelters them has. We must also say that mostly this situation is a positive contribution to the city because the people from other states and cultures that settle will enrich with their realities, uses, customs, work in the place, and of course that is very good.

Main problems posed by multiculturalism

While of course the majority of the Nations and individuals that uphold and promote the freedom that we spoke of among its main maxims, will defend and promote the existence and survival of the multicultural, we cannot ignore in this regard that there are some related dangers. effectively to this trend, such as: triggering an economic crisis in the host country as a consequence of foreign labor accepting the worst paid jobs.

We can also find the exclusion of those minority groups.

And on the other hand, another issue to seriously consider is that the fragmentation of society in so many parts could lead to the decline of public debate and democratic unity.

These points listed are, of course, among the most serious that could be triggered according to the perspective of some experts and scholars of the phenomenon, however, this does not mean that it occurs always and everywhere. Obviously scenarios such as those described will take place in those territories and countries that give rise to bad political decisions.

Meanwhile, if a state offers the same socio-economic conditions to its own and others, this does not have to happen and everyone can coexist harmoniously, and even more, enrich themselves from those differences of origin that they present.
