general

definition of undergraduate

In the university environment there is a specific terminology to refer to the levels of academic studies. In this sense, undergraduate careers are those that provide a technical qualification to carry out a professional activity. As it indicates, these careers are at an academic level prior to undergraduate careers.

Note that in most university programs, upon completion of undergraduate studies it is possible to access the undergraduate level and when the latter has already been obtained it is possible to access the higher level, that is, the postgraduate or master's degree.

An illustrative example

The degree or undergraduate degree in the area of computer engineering provides the student with a series of specific knowledge, such as computer security, technological infrastructures, basic programming, software construction, robotics or multimedia systems.

At the computer engineering degree level, the contents have a more theoretical and advanced dimension. Some of the subjects could be the following: algebraic structures for computing, programming fundamentals, statistical methods, algorithm design, intelligent systems or databases. In most university programs you have to complete a final degree project.

In a postgraduate or master's program in the same area, the student specializes in a specific field of computing, such as the creation and development of video games, quantum computing or optimization of transport networks.

A decisive question for the professional future

Choosing an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree is an important decision for a student, since their professional future may depend on it. In this sense, there are several aspects that must be considered so that the final choice is the correct one.

First of all, the personal vocation must be highlighted. Likewise, it is necessary to know the modality of studies so that they meet personal expectations.

A relevant factor is the prestige of each university and the associated services they incorporate (job boards, further studies in foreign universities, scholarships, internship programs in companies ...). Obviously, all students should inform themselves in advance about the professional opportunities of their studies.

Finally, the price of tuition must be taken into account, since university studies have a cost that can be high.
