In matter politics is designated as dictator to the ruler who assumes all the powers of the state and who, then, by holding all of them, the executive, legislative and judicial authorities are not subject to control of any kind.
The dictator is considered the highest authority in all areas and levels and generally accedes to the government in an illegitimate way, for example leading a coup with the complicity of the military sector, or the military field accompanies the coup of a civilian. He does not follow at all what justice tells him but what his own hyper-personalistic will dictates.

So the dictator, will impose a de facto government in which there will be no division of powers. The division of powers is one of the essential conditions of the rule of law.

And in common language, starting from the aforementioned reference, a dictator is called that person who is characterized by abusing the power or authority that he holds and who likes to treat other people harshly by asserting that indicated power.
The synonym that we use the most for this word is that of tyrant, meanwhile, the one that is opposed is that of democrat, because precisely designates that individual who defends and is a supporter of democracy.
It should be noted that Democracy is a system of government that consists of the people being the highest sovereign and as such freely elects, through elections, those political leaders they consider to best represent them.
