definition of paint

Artistic painting is considered one of the fine arts, understood as a graphic representation based on the use of pigments and / or other substances to create a visual work.

The painting is carried out with different elements, in general, through brushes and brushes, but it can also be done using the human body or even almost any other object as an instrument or as part of the final work.

Among the pigments, the most common are watercolors, tempera, acrylics, pastels and oils, and painting is usually done on a surface with various texture and absorption characteristics such as a canvas, paper, a wall and others. .

In addition to the various techniques, painting can be representative (look for the more or less faithful representation of the object) or abstract (which does not seek to be precise in representation, but operates through the symbolic). Painting can have a purely aesthetic pursuit as its objective, but it can also reflect symbolic, political, socio-cultural and all kinds of aspects. It can be done with a living model or taking a real landscape as a reference, or it can also be created from a mental idea.

Throughout history, painting has evolved through various styles. From, for example, prehistoric rock art that was carried out through the printing of pigments on surfaces such as stone or rocks, through the art of the Middle Ages, the scope of perspective in the Renaissance, until reaching the 20th century avant-gardes and contemporary art with its representative currents and abstract currents that experimented with different components, characteristics and styles.

There are no clear limits to determine what is art and what is not, and in the same way painting extends its scope, since it does not necessarily have to be done with a brush on a canvas, but we can also call a drawing painting, a graffiti or even digital art that is produced by means of computers.
