definition of entity

The concept of being is a concept that is linked to ontology and the notion of being or the existence of things. We understand by entity everything that is conceived as something existing, whether animate or inanimate, abstract or concrete. Thus, we can say that the term is very broad and that it can be applied to elements or things that are completely different from each other. However, something that unites all of them and that makes them equal is the idea of existence, that they are happening in some way and that they have entity or existence.

As said, the concept of being can be applied to different elements or things. Thus, the most basic description of being is that which exists. Within that description, many things can fit, in fact almost all. In this sense, an entity can be something animated, such as an animal or even the human being since both are entities that exist in this world. But an entity can also be something inanimate, like a traffic light, a building. The fact that they do not move or evolve does not matter because the idea is that they exist.

The term is usually used to make references to rather abstract things or phenomena that suppose a certain entity at a legal or administrative level. Thus, institutions, agencies, companies or establishments are understood as entities in terms of the representation and legal status they have and that involves elements such as a hierarchical organization, documents and foundational charters, an objective to be socially fulfilled, etc. These entities are usually public or private entities that make up different functions in the community and that are made up of people but that are, in more specific terms, abstract or non-palpable and are necessary creations of man to organize his life in society.
