what is giving up and giving up »definition and concept

If a person gives up something because of some kind of pressure, a claudication occurs. On the other hand, if someone decides not to uphold their convictions for any reason, they are also giving up.

In Spanish, the verb to give up is equivalent to others, such as surrender, give in, or compromise. In any case, if someone decides to give up, it means that they give up, surrender or give up their ideas.

As for its etymological origin, it comes from the Latin verb claudicare, which originally meant to limp. It should be noted that in the language of medicine the idea of claudication is used to express the paralysis of some limb caused by some painful pathology.

Different contexts of language in which the idea of giving up is used

All people have personal beliefs. Such beliefs serve as a guide for everyday behavior. In principle, no one is willing to renounce them and a surrender only occurs when an external cause forces it to do so. That external cause can be a threat or a psychological pressure.

In a sports match there are always two rivals, usually two people or two teams. When one of them understands that victory is impossible, he may be forced to surrender. This involves acknowledging defeat and awarding victory to the opponent. Something very similar happens in the confrontations between two armies, since the one who gives in assumes his defeat and the consequences that derive from it.

In the political sphere, sometimes there is also a surrender. This occurs when a leader or a political party makes the decision not to stand in an election or when a political formation avoids the confrontation of ideas with other formations.

Do not give up in the face of adversity

Faced with the problems that inevitably arise, there are two options: surrender or stand firm in one's own convictions. Imagine a medical student who dreams of one day becoming a doctor who alleviates the suffering of others. Your desire may be firm, but it is very likely that you will encounter an obstacle along the way: difficult subjects during your career, personal problems that make you think about a possible dropout or any other setback.

These adverse situations act as a threat that could change your project and lead you to abandon your dream. The medical student has another option when faced with problems: do not give up. Not giving up implies facing difficulties and resisting.
