definition of catering

The word catering, from the English language, refers to the activity of providing a specially contracted food service to clients in specific situations, such as events of various kinds. The word catering comes from the English verb 'to cater', which means to serve, to attend. Catering is then the service that involves the care and offer of a varied set of foods in exceptional situations such as events. Although this word does not belong to the Spanish language, it is now accepted at least in informal language and is in common use.

Catering can be defined as the service offered by a certain type of food in events of different characteristics. To be served properly, the catering must always be hired in advance so that both clients and professionals in the area can agree on the food options to be served, the quantity, the cost and other elements related to the matter. In this sense, catering is central to any type of event since it is one of the most colorful elements of a party, a celebration or a meeting.

Catering is generally made up of products and foods of various characteristics. Although in most cases the catering consists of small and easy-to-consume foods such as canapés, cold cuts, cheeses, empanadas, crumb sandwiches, hot dishes and others, the catering service can also consist of highly elaborated dishes that are served as in a restaurant and must be accompanied by the appropriate drinks and garnishes.

Depending on the type of food, the number of diners, the necessary ingredients and the exclusivity of the recipes to be prepared, the catering can vary in price although normally the costs of such service are usually high. The arrangement of the catering can also be different according to each case, but in general the foods that are part of a catering service are arranged in a striking way to capture the attention of the diners.
