definition of intrapersonal

When we talk about a situation in which the individual is very aware of their qualities, abilities and limitations, we tend to talk about 'intrapersonal' intelligence. According to the multiple intelligences system created by Howard GardnerEach individual has certain types of intelligences that facilitate certain actions or that make them have a tendency to behave in a certain way. Among these intelligences, the intrapersonal is the one that indicates the introspective quality that a person can have.

One of the main characteristics of intrapersonal intelligence is the ability to be in deep contact with yourself. While this may seem essential and basic for any type of individual, it means that a person with this type of intelligence will have an easier time contacting the inside rather than the outside, that is, with other people. Hence, a large part of individuals with intrapersonal intelligence are characterized by being shy, introverted and quiet people when exposed in a group.

This does not mean that they cannot establish solid relationships with other people, but that either it will not be their priority or it will not be extremely simple for them as it is for people with interpersonal intelligence. Nor does it mean that they cannot develop other types of intelligence, but that it will dominate their personalities and characters in an essential way.

In general, subjects with a type of intrapersonal intelligence tend to show a tendency to seek to carry out their tasks and obligations by themselves, thus obtaining better results than working in a group. They also have a deep contact with their feelings, emotions and sensations, for which they can be described as highly sensitive individuals and aware of pain, joy, etc. Following what is established by Gardner, intrapersonal intelligence shows ease for a person to develop professions in which reflective tasks are important (for example, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, psychology and others).
