definition of passerby

The term passerby designate the one individual who walks or passes through a certain place. The passerby travels and lives in the public space of the city through which he is moving and also, in some way, will transform him with his occupation.

Individual who mobilizes walking through the streets

Meanwhile, the public space through which this individual passes is made up of streets, alleys, avenues, squares, among others. Therefore, since they are places through which the passerby will wander, they must present a adequate structure and condition in order to ensure the safety and integrity of the passerby.

Individuals move around the city through various means of transport, the car, undoubtedly one of the most used, buses or public buses, trains, subways, bicycles, motorcycles.

All of these imply a dependency, that is, if the person wants to travel by car they must have one, if they want to do it by train they must go to the train stop and take it, while there is a means of transport that does not depend on anything external but of ourselves: walking.

The walk is a means that allows people to also go from one place to another in the city, whether they are short, medium or long distances.

Meanwhile, the person who walks is popularly designated as a passerby.

Respect the traffic rules to take care of life

To circulate correctly and safely and avoid any type of accident, pedestrians must respect traffic regulations that also include them as well as motorists, cyclists, etc.

In principle, they should walk along the margins of the streets and through the areas indicated as pedestrian paths and which are distinguished by thick vertical white lines.

They must also respect the traffic lights, which tell them when they can cross the street or avenue and when they should wait and not do it because cars are circulating.

The priority of crossing, in the corresponding places to do so, will always be the passerby and therefore whoever passes through a vehicle must respect it and wait for them to cross.

Now, it is important to say that just as those who circulate with vehicles and bicycles incur serious offenses and often do not respect these priorities, it is also a reality that passersby do not respect the signs either and often cross through prohibited or dangerous places, or even without respecting the traffic lights.

This lack of awareness is what often triggers serious traffic accidents that can culminate in the death of the pedestrian.

Walking, a healthy activity

Walking is an activity that doctors normally indicate for those who want to improve their physical condition, walking is good for circulation, for those who have heart problems, among other conditions, so, taking into account this question, it is essential that governments not only take care of guaranteeing the safety of the sidewalks, fixing those routes that are raised or left and that certainly constitute a risk to the life of any person, but also promote the activity of walking, developing areas destined exclusively for the transit of pedestrians where there are no hazards such as heavy traffic.

Another additional advantage that is obtained from promoting walks is that in this way traffic would be lightened, especially in large cities, and also the saturation that public transport sometimes suffers.

On the other hand, the term passerby is used to refer to that individual who is passing through or temporarily residing in a place.

Synonym of pedestrian

We must also emphasize that the concept is commonly used in our language as a synonym for pedestrian, which is undoubtedly the most popular term to refer to the person who walks through the streets of a city.
