definition of school regulation

All schools need a series of rules so that there is an adequate order in the teaching process. These norms are embodied in a school regulation.

The fundamental idea of any school regulation is to establish what is allowed and, above all, what is prohibited in relation to the behavior of teachers and students.

Bases for the proper functioning of a community

The school regulation is a document that specifies in detail what is the internal regime that should govern the conduct of the entire educational community. There are a series of aspects that are usually included in this type of document: respect for established schedules, what behaviors are not admissible and their corresponding sanctions, hygiene rules, as well as general behavior guidelines in relationships between teachers and students.

Purpose of the school regulation

A school regulation is not simply a set of prohibitions but must have an educational and training purpose. For this reason, the regulations must be known by the students, in such a way that a teacher explains the meaning of it. Students must understand that the regulation is positive and it is not a sanctioning regime.

Respect for school regulations implies assuming ethical limits in individual behavior. If limits are violated or not respected, there are consequences that must be followed. Failure to comply with the regulations would mean an academic activity with many difficulties and an education without values. In any case, this type of regulation has to be adapted to the age of the students, since the idea of respecting a rule is very different with 6 years than with 15.

Changes of time, evolution in the concepts of education, respect and rights

Throughout history, school regulations have changed. In the past, physical punishment and strict discipline were common, and today the rules seek to avoid undesirable situations (for example, bullying or disrespect for teachers).

From a social point of view, there is a debate about what the type of school regulation should be. One could speak of two positions. Some argue that the regulation must be strict, in its content and in its application. On the contrary, others consider that regulations should be flexible and their practical application has to be adapted to the circumstances of each academic context.

Consequently, there are two educational methodologies linked to school regulations. The strictest one emphasizes sanctioning elements and the most permissive considers that the idea of prohibition should be replaced by prevention and dialogue.
