definition of nationality

The one of nationality It is a concept of widespread use in our language and that is linked to the condition of the particular geographical origin held by an individual, that is, when you talk about nationality you will be talking about the country, state, or nation in which a person was born and in which they have been legally registered as a citizen of there. For example, María was born in Mexico and her parents later carried out the corresponding procedures to register her as a citizen of that country, so María will have Mexican nationality.

For instance, it will be called original nationality to which is acquired at birth, meanwhile, each legal system considers two issues to establish it: the ius sanguinis or blood law, which follows the criterion that a person inherits the nationality of his father or mother; and the ius soli or right of ground, which considers that the person corresponds to the nationality of the territory in which he was born.

It is important to point out that people can acquire the nationalities of other countries in which they were not born through various procedures, while they can do so because they have a direct ancestor that enables them to manage the nationality of another country.

Thus, if Mario is Argentine but his paternal grandfather is Spanish, Mario, he will be able to apply to the competent bodies for Spanish nationality because the law supports him in this regard. It should be noted that some nations allow the children and grandchildren of their citizens to also inherit citizenship.

On the other hand, an individual who was not born in a certain country may obtain citizenship if he marries someone who is a native of there. Laura is Peruvian, she went to live in Italy and married an Italian, so after a while she will be able to manage her Italian citizenship. This last case, without a doubt, has proliferated in recent decades as a consequence of labor migration as a result of globalization, that is, many people who left their countries of origin, in search of new horizons and job opportunities, in addition to settling down and working in another country they formed a family.

It is worth mentioning that those who obtain citizenship through the aforementioned channels are recognized as any ordinary citizen and have full rights and duties as such.

On the other hand, the concept of nationality is used to designate that region that has certain peculiarities that give it an autonomous and unique personality within the nation in which it is located.
