definition of transfer

The term transfer is applied in the area of technology especially to the notion of data transfer. This is represented by the transfer of information of a different type from a certain type of device to another similar or of a different type. Data transfer is today one of the simplest and most useful processes to perform with electronic devices and many of the possibilities are specially adapted to facilitate the task for the average user.

When we talk about transfer we are referring to one of the easiest tasks that a computer allows us to perform with another electronic device. This transfer is always data and these can be represented in different styles either in multimedia material, texts, or software among others. In this way one can access various types of files and material in different places if one has the appropriate methods and devices.

Normally, the transfer process can take place in two basic ways: through a network system or through a port, the most common being the well-known USB port. Depending on the quality of the devices or the chosen method, the speed of the transfer may vary. On the other hand, the devices involved in the process must have the same protocol language that makes them compatible. In this sense, having computers on a network allows access from one device to information that is stored on another device. In the case of USB ports, these are normally used with external devices such as cell phones, pen drives, printers, other computers and memory devices.

The transfer can also occur with or without the need for cables. If one needs cables to carry out this process, these will have to be stranded cables, fiber optic or coaxial cables. Wireless transfers are basically satellite or infrared systems.
