definition of disinfectant

The word disinfectant is used to designate those products or natural elements that serve to disinfect, clean, prevent the presence of bacteria, viruses and other types of microorganisms dangerous to health. Depending on the type of product or element that is being talked about, we may be referring to greater or less aggressiveness, greater or less dangerous for the human being, greater or lesser power of effectiveness, duration, etc. In most cases, disinfectant products are chemical and, as they contain substances that can be harmful to humans, they must be treated with care and caution in order to avoid accidents.

Disinfectants exist today in a wide variety of types and models and if we stick to the definition of disinfectant as a product or element that cleans a surface or space and prevents the presence of dirt, bacteria or viruses, many commonly used products can enter within this group: soaps, chlorines, detergents, aerosols, floor or glass cleaners, waxes, etc. All these products have the main objective of leaving the surface or space clean and safe.

However, there are other types of disinfectants that are not normally available to anyone due to their abrasive power and extreme danger. These materials must be used with extreme care since, in some cases, they are directly poisonous products that can harm any living being. These products are those that are typically used to disinfect environments of pests or possible larger bacteria, to avoid the presence of pests in rural areas, etc. and they should always be applied in ventilated, open spaces or with no presence of living beings. Those who apply them must also have the specific material and clothing to protect themselves and avoid the slightest contact with its effects.
