definition of trekking

Trekking is a sporting and recreational activity that consists of taking long walks on mountain routes. It is a sports practice oriented to contact with nature and carried out with a non-competitive spirit.

The term trekking is normally translated into Spanish as hiking. Although in practice both concepts are equivalent, there is a small difference, since hiking is equivalent to hiking, which refers to mountain routes with a moderate level of difficulty, while in trekking the level of physical demand is higher and medium. natural presents more difficulties. In any case, hiking and trekking are very similar and share the same idea: walking through the mountains to exercise in a natural setting.

The spirit of trekking

The combination of sport and nature makes this activity attractive. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that trekking incorporates other complementary elements (taking photos, getting to know the fauna and flora or learning cultural aspects associated with each route).

A characteristic of trekking is its adaptability to personal physical conditions. On the other hand, it is also possible to adapt it to the particular circumstances of each one, since the mountain routes can be done alone, as a couple, as a family or with friends. Trekking is a very open activity, where some observe the birds, others take photographs and some give more importance to communication. Thus, starting from a simple idea (walking in the mountains) it is possible to satisfy various concerns.

Safety and material

Trekking is not a risky sport, but this does not imply that safety should be neglected, since the mountain has certain associated dangers and it is convenient to adopt measures to minimize adverse situations. The first measure is to know the weather situation prior to the start of the route. You have to know the route beforehand and it is advisable to carry a GPS or a map so as not to get lost. Food and drink are necessary equally. Trekking specialists advise you to carry a mobile phone to face a possible emergency. A first aid kit and basic knowledge of health care are also highly recommended.

With regard to footwear, it is essential that it is appropriate (specific trekking footwear is sold in establishments dedicated to sports). The clothing must be appropriate for each season of the year (the raincoat and warm clothing must be available in the backpack).
