definition of creed

Credo comes from Latin, specifically from the verb credere which means to believe. It is a term with two meanings. First of all, the Creed is a Catholic prayer. On the other hand, a creed is a set of beliefs.

In catholicism

The Creed is one of the most popular prayers in Catholicism. It is so named because this sentence begins with the statement "I believe in God" which in Latin is equivalent to "Credo in Deum".

Throughout this prayer some of the fundamental dogmas of the Catholic faith are presented:

1) the belief in an almighty God as the true creator of all that exists,

2) belief in Jesus Christ as the son of God,

3) a brief explanation of the figure of Jesus Christ, since it indicates that he was born of the Virgin Mary by the work of the Holy Spirit, that he was "crucified, died and was buried" and that he finally rose again,

4) Finally, in this prayer respect for the Catholic Church is made manifest and three fundamental principles are underlined: that sins will be forgiven, that there is the resurrection and eternal life.

This prayer began to be prayed among the first Christians in the ritual of baptism and was initially called the "Apostles' Creed". However, it was officially incorporated into Catholic doctrine from the first Council of Nicea in 325 AD. C and for this reason this sentence is also known as "the Nicene Creed".

It should be noted that one of the most important issues in Christianity was debated at the Council of Nicaea: the divine nature of Jesus Christ. In this sense, the Catholic Creed is a prayer in which the official position of the church with respect to Jesus Christ is highlighted, since in the first centuries of Christianity there were some religious currents (especially Arianism) that denied the dogma of the Trinity, that is, that God exists in three different persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Belief set

With the word creed the ascription to a political ideology, a religion or a social tendency is communicated. Thus, there is a creed of the left, environmentalist, Islamic and, ultimately, of any trend or current that incorporates a set of principles, values and ideas. Each creed has, of course, its opposite creed.

Some voiceovers

Many religious terms have been incorporated into popular language. In some phrases the word creed is used: "to be the last word of the creed", "in a creed" "that sings the creed" or "to remain with the creed in the mouth".
