definition of hermit

The concept of hermit It is widely used in our language, having more than one sense.

The most popular and used by all is the one that designates that person who likes to be alone all the time, to live in absolute solitude, without relating to others, without having a social life in any way.

This decision may be due to a life choice or be the consequence of some mental problems that lead the person to want to be in that state.

We will not see the hermit in social gatherings, he will leave little of his house and also if he comes across someone he will keep few and concise words.

The common people who obviously do not live in this way see the hermit with a bad eye, with distrust, and even more, will use the concept in a negative and indiscriminate way to refer to one who shows the aforementioned characteristics.

On the other hand, the concept is linked to a common practice of some religious who profess the Christian religion and who decide to seclude themselves in a hermitage in order to achieve a close and perfect relationship with God. The hermitage can be a sanctuary or a small chapel that is located on the outskirts of a city or town. There are usually not in the same ordinary cults.

Because the idea is to totally break with the ties that the city proposes, and in return remain silent and praying.

From the beginning of Christianity this behavior was appreciated and over time it spread.

It is also worth noting that the hermit in the sense just indicated is not typical of the Christian religion but it is also possible to find this practice within Buddhism, Hinduism and other known oriental practices.

And finally hermit can be a type of crab that lives inside an empty shell abandoned by a sea snail. Basically the shell uses it as protection. Formally this crustacean is called hermit crab and it is characterized by presenting ten legs and a soft abdomen.
