definition of federalism

The concept of federalism has a recurring use in the field of politics since in this way a Proposal or political doctrine that promotes that power should be distributed between the central government and the rest of the states or provinces associated with it, and that of course, they belong to the same national territory.

The concept is also used to refer to the political system that sustains in this idea.

In the world there are many countries that have federal regimes, the Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Mexico and the United States, for example, are some of them.

Then, in the federations there are several autonomous territorial entities, normally called provinces, cantons, regions or states and each of which has its own government, a constitution and also its own legislative representatives and courts of justice. Obviously there is an interrelation with the central power, however, in the executive, political and judicial matters that concern their territories they are certainly independent and do not depend on the central authority to decide on them, far from it.

However, it is important that we emphasize that the federal states do not have the right to separate from the federation by their unilateral decision. This is not factually possible.

And we must also mark that in international matters these federated states do not have jurisdiction per se in international matters as if it happens with the central state. And as a consequence of this, they will not be considered independent at the request of international law.

It is worth mentioning that federalism usually has a republican political system, that is to say, in it the law rules over all things and the equality before it of all the people who live in it.

The aforementioned countries and some others that today are organized in a federal format are in that way because at a certain moment in their history and due to the situation they decided to agree to join together to solve problems that involved everyone; Another route has been that of constitutional reform that ends up resolving the transition from a central to a federal administration.
