seal definition

The word seal comes from the Latin sigillum and has several different meanings, although they all have something in common.

An identification for sending messages

A stamp is an official accreditation used when sending correspondence. Although at present the sending of letters is in disuse, to do so some type of stamp is necessary, which is bought in a tobacconist and is placed on the right end of the envelope. The further away the destination of the letter, the higher the amount of the stamp. Normally, each country carries out a broadcast periodically with an image (the profile of a president or a famous person is very characteristic). The fondness for stamp collecting is known as philately.

The postage stamp as it is known today began in Britain in the 19th century and this stamp quickly became adapted to the postal system around the world. With regard to philately, it is worth remembering that this term was invented shortly after the appearance of the stamps and is made up of two Greek words: philos, which means love or friend and ateles, which means without postage ( because the recipient of the letter does not have to pay anything, since the amount of the stamp already covers the shipping costs).

Institutional and product stamps

The concept of seal is also present in the official certification of an institution. Certain documents need to present a guarantee of authenticity and for this it is essential that they are accompanied by the corresponding seal (the word stamp is also used).

When it comes to proving that a product is authentic and has a proven level of quality, some type of seal is also used. In this way, it is possible to communicate that the product in question is not a fake.

Formerly, a sign or seal was used on a document to represent the authenticity of an individual (known as a sealed seal). This sign could be accompanied by a signature and represented the owner of the document and was a common practice among nobles. Currently it is only used in an exceptional way (for example, to personalize an invitation).

Have a personal stamp

In a figurative sense, it is said that someone has a certain stamp when they have a singular characteristic in some personal aspect. Thus, a person has a stamp of elegance when it is evident that he possesses this trait. This expression is commonly used to emphasize an element of distinction, but sometimes it can be the opposite (a stamp of vulgarity, for example).
