definition of suspicion

Suspicion is distrust of someone or something. Thus, faced with some circumstances or people, it is possible to have a feeling of suspicion, in the sense that there is some aspect that is strange and disturbing.

Being suspicious of something or someone indicates that there is some doubt about its supposed authenticity, appropriateness, or goodness. In this sense, it is common to receive apparently positive information that, despite this, is suspicious for some reason (for example, because it is so positive that it does not seem credible).

The importance of trust

If an individual tends not to trust others, we are talking about a suspicious person, that is, someone who is very cautious, cautious and distrustful. The opposite of suspicious would be credulous, gullible or trusting, concepts that manifest an assessment of naivety. The naive and the suspicious person would be the two opposite poles.

Feeling suspicious or suspicious is part of everyday life and our culture. In fact, there are many expressions and sayings that communicate this idea: think badly and you will be right, have the fly behind your ear or believe lightly, great clumsiness. These examples highlight a widespread recommendation: that we must be cautious and cautious, because overconfidence is a mistake.

Why do we have misgivings?

Fear is very present in our decisions and we must not forget that suspicion indicates a certain fear or insecurity. If something has a potential danger (let's think about the installation of a nuclear power plant in the place where we live) it is logical that we have some concerns about it.

Human beings can tell the truth or lie, but it is not easy to make a correct distinction between one or the other. For this reason, some credible information can cause a certain suspicion. Keep in mind that lying is trying to make the lie appear true. When in doubt about the truth or falsehood of something, a suspicious posture acts as a defense mechanism. It is a way of being alert and not lowering your guard.

Pessimistic trends that influence

Sometimes we have misgivings that are not caused by fear or doubt about the truth or falsehood of something, but by an inclination to negative thinking. In fact, the pessimistic person tends to be suspicious of others and something very similar happens with the ill-thought-out, the one who tends to have a negative opinion about others.

A skeptical intellectual position or skepticism as a current of thought is a deeply ingrained tendency and indicates that it is not convenient to over-believe in any idea and it is preferable to doubt almost everything.
