definition of field study

The notion of field study is one of the most important notions of any type of science since it is the moment in which the theory is put to the test to establish whether the elements that characterize it are correct or not. Field studies obviously vary according to the type of science to which we refer, since a field study of an exact science will not be the same as a field study of a social science. However, all sciences have their own method to carry out these studies and verify whether what is established in the theory is correct or not.

Science starts from the establishment of different types of hypotheses and then theories that may or may not be corrected or approved. When knowledge is still in the stage of a hypothesis, it is essential for professionals of that science to carry out different field studies that go to the concrete, to the reality observable by that science and that put into practice the ideas that are established preventively in the theory.

It is common to think of field studies of the exact and natural sciences because they constantly draw on nature. Thus, a field study of the different areas of biology takes place in a specific, more or less delimited natural environment. However, the idea of field study also exists for the social sciences and it is there that the sciences go to social reality to verify or disprove different types of ideas.

Field studies are very important for any science since they are the ones that allow progress in the formation of new knowledge or those that require certain ideas or concepts to be revised. In many cases, field studies must be performed multiple times if the results are not convincing or definitive.
