tuning definition

The term tuning has different meanings: in the field of human relations, in systems communication and in the musical sphere.

There is talk of harmony between two or more people when there is a good relationship between them or they have some kind of coincidence. Thus, a boss and a subordinate are in good harmony if their employment relationship is harmonious and there is a good understanding between them, since they agree easily and their way of acting is compatible. When this does not occur, one can speak of incompatibility.

Tuner in the media

In the context of communication systems, we talk about tuning when a tuner is activated. For example, a radio receiver that is part of an audio system that connects to an amplifier. Tuners are used to watch television channels and allow an analog system to adapt to a different signal, for example DTT. In this way, two different systems become compatible because there is a harmony between them.

Tuning from a musical perspective is the sound piece that is part of the headline of a radio or television program. It is a very short piece of music, usually a few seconds long, and is intended to announce the program. In this way, it is possible to attract the attention of the viewer or listener.

Musical tuning as a communication strategy

Specialists in radio or television communication attach great importance to the tuning of a program. It could be said that this musical element is part of their brand, so it would be one of their hallmarks.

Each program has a content modality and a certain rhythm and the tuning must connect with these basic elements. Let's imagine a television show dedicated to mystery. In this case, the tuning must communicate the idea of mystery through sound. Consequently, the tuning should suggest the content.

3 types of tunings

In technical terms, the tuning of a program can be of three types: as a curtain (a fragment that separates the different contents), as a burst (the fragment is especially brief and intense) or the musical beat (even shorter and usually with a tone upward). In any of its modalities, tuning intervenes in the dynamics of a program and its main function is to give it rhythm and liveliness.
