signature definition

The term signature has two major and most common meanings, quite different from each other. One of the two is the one that refers to the signature as a rubric that is used to make clear the acceptance or authorship of a document. The second meaning is the one that refers to the firm as a company or multinational in which a specific economic activity is carried out.

Starting with the first meaning, the signature is that drawing that a person makes at the bottom or at the end of a text or work. The signature can serve to express two ideas: on the one hand, if we are talking about a legal document, the signature can indicate acceptance or agreement with what is expressed in the text. You can also express commitment or responsibility to respect what that text or document says (for example, if we are talking about a contract between several parties who sign or subscribe). But on the other hand, the signature can also express the authorship of a work, such as when it is signed at the end of a literary work or on the canvas of a painting. This type of signatures serve to make it known who carried out the work and that it is not anonymous.

Understood as a rubric, the signature says a lot about the person and there are specialists who analyze the shape, the inclination, the intensity of the ink, the stripes or additions, etc., to better understand the personality or character of a person. It is believed that a lot of data about an individual can be obtained from his signature, even without even knowing him.

The second meaning of the term signature is one that refers to a company. Although this is not so common in the Spanish language (it is in English when talking about signed), the signature can also be the legal name that a company has, the one with which it is presented to its clients and that appears in all documentation. The firm is thus a company that develops a specific activity, that has certain financial and human resources and that carries out specific procedures.
