definition of idiopathic

The word idiopathic is a qualifying adjective whose use is given mainly at the request of the medical field. In medicine they speak of idiopathic when something presents the conditions of spontaneous irruption, or failing that, when it is presumed that the cause that originated it is obscure or unknown. That is to say, putting it in more informal terms, the adjective idiopathic is generally applied when one wants to give an account of a disease whose etiology is unknown so far. Meanwhile, etiology is the science that is devoted to the study of the causes that cause things and in the case of medicine it is more precisely about the pathogenesis.

Specifically, idiopathic is a term that corresponds to the Nosology, as the science that deals with describing, explaining, differentiating and classifying diseases and pathological processes is called, that is, it is in this branch of medicine in which it acquires a notorious presence. When, for example, there are causes of a condition that are very little known, but of course there is a portion of the population that manifests them, it will be said that such a condition is idiopathic.

So far, with certain diseases, medicine has not yet been able to establish a cause that justifies the large percentage of cases that manifest them, so it is in these cases where the term reaches its maximum expression. In any case, as we know, science and medicine do not rest in the search for solutions, drugs and treatments that reduce or directly make diseases and diseases that affect human beings disappear, then, as scientific advances prosper and show more positive results, the percentage of idiopathic diseases will drop considerably. Medicine and science advance in order to that goal of course.
