Social

definition of conformity

The term conformism is an abstract term that is used to refer to the attitude that a human being can have towards life and the different situations that they have to live day to day. The idea of conformity comes from the adjective "conform".

Being satisfied with something means accepting it and although when this adjective is used a positive meaning is usually given to the person, in the case of conformity that acceptance becomes negative as long as the person is characterized by accepting everything that happens to him regardless of whether that is negative or positive and do nothing to fight against what you do not like or satisfy.

Conformity is in many ways one of the most common attitudes of our time and this has to do with the type of society in which we live. Today's society causes its members to be immersed in a complex system of routines, demands, duties and occupations from which it is very difficult to get rid of if one wants to be able to survive in the best possible way.

Faced with the permanent need to follow routines and social mandates, people tend to show rather conformist attitudes with their present and their destiny because they simply do not have time or enough power to fight against what does not satisfy them.

Many times conformism also has to do with the fear or insecurity of losing one's social place, not wanting to change because of being in a safe place, not looking for more triumphs or achievements because those that one possesses are already enough to lead a more or less normal life.

At different times, human beings have known how to rebel not only against everyday situations but also against social, political and cultural structures, generating changes so profound that society was never the same again.

A clear example of this can be the French Revolution, one of the most crucial historical moments for the West since it meant a paradigm shift not only political but also social and cultural. At a time like that, conformism plays a very small or almost no place since people do not accept that reality and are dissatisfied in various ways.
