definition of old testament

The Old Testament is that part of the Bible that includes from the Pentateuch to the historical, wisdom and prophetic books. The Pentateuch is made up of: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The Old Testament is made up of books that were written in different stages of the Hebrew people. These books have a pre-dinner background: the promise of the birth of a savior, the son of God. The New Testament begins precisely with the story of Jesus on Earth.

Structure of the Old Testament

The pentateuch is an integral part of the Old Testament. In it you can find Genesis where the creation of the world is related, the description of the universal flood, the story of Adam and Eve, the story of the Tower of Babel and the formation of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Another of the most important parts of the Old Testament is the Exodus. It describes the march of the slaves from Egypt, a march led by Moses, until the delivery of the tables of the law on Mount Sinai. Leviticus includes topics related to laws for Levitical and priestly groups. The book of Numbers describes the commandments. Deuteronomy gives prominence to Moses' speech before his death.

According to tradition, from the Christian perspective, the Old Testament was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by ancient prophets who, through their work, preached the message of Jesus explaining what their mission on Earth was to be. Moses was the one who wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

In simple language it explains what was the origin of the Earth, of the human being, of the different languages and races and also, the root of the house of Israel.

Most of the Old Testament books were written in Hebrew. The old and the new testament are interconnected by a common thread. The Old Testament is made up of 39 books. Includes 12 historical books and 5 poetic books. 17 Prophetic Books.

Psalms and Proverbs

To understand the New Testament it is essential to read the old, understanding that the truth is gradually revealed.

Through the Psalms and Proverbs you can also internalize messages of wisdom expressed in simple language. Just as through the Old Testament you can learn about customs and traditions of the Jewish people.
