definition of intensity

The term intensity could be defined as the degree or level of a force that is applied on a natural object or on a mechanical device. As the concept of intensity is present in many scientific disciplines, it can also be applied to other elements such as abstract mathematical elements, as well as to the character or temperament of an individual, in the case of psychology. Intensity is always a quality of the object itself and is something that is used to describe and define it in certain moments, spaces or situations.

If we seek to understand what intensity is or how it acts on objects from a physical-mathematical point of view, we must make it clear that intensity is the result of the equation that multiplies energy density (or energy per unit) by speed in which such energy moves. It is clear, then, that the notion of intensity always supposes a movement from one space to another, movement that is generated by force. This simple equation is used especially to understand phenomena such as the intensity of sound, light or other elements of nature such as water, air, etc.

The term intensity is also commonly used to describe certain types of human personalities or temperaments. The intensity in this sense is never reducible to an equation, but it is a process that combines certain biological-chemical elements with psychic elements. This combination of elements is particular to each individual and generally generates different types of characters that can vary in the level of intensity demonstrated in the behavior. The intensity of a personality can be made visible in the inability to contain, repress or neutralize certain sensations, feelings or emotions. In this sense, an intense person is one who acts under the orders of their emotions (crying, passion, anger, anger) rather than under the orders of reason or logic.
