what is indifference »definition and concept

Whoever behaves with contempt towards others, acts reluctantly and expresses indifference towards others, has a complacent behavior. It supposes an attitude very little respectful and typical of arrogant and intolerant people.

Etymologically, the term indifference comes from Latin, specifically from the word displeasure.

Inappropriate and asocial behavior

The complacent attitude is the opposite of kindness, respect, and good manners. In dealing with others there is an unwritten general rule that should be remembered: we must treat others as we would like to be treated.

The complacent person may have his personal reasons for behaving with arrogance and indifference, either because he thinks he is superior or because he is not interested in what happens to others. Despite his reasons, his attitude indicates rudeness and no empathy.

Lack of compromise

The word nonchalance is not always used to describe contemptuous behavior towards someone, as it sometimes refers to little interest in an activity. Anyone who performs a task or activity without determination and interest can also be viewed as complacent. In this sense, their attitude is not projected onto another person but rather manifests itself in a specific activity.

The student unmotivated by his studies or the worker who does not commit himself to his work activity, are typical examples of complacent behavior. At times, certain gestures or tones of voice (for example, a yawn or a grimace expressing lack of interest) can be considered as dismissive.

People who are normally apathetic about a task feel emotionally disconnected. In other words, they fulfill their obligations, but without any enthusiasm for what they are doing.

Although in some cases there may be a reason that justifies this behavior (for example, someone who works in a situation of labor exploitation), the complacent attitude is a psychologically damaging reaction and not recommended. Thus, if we have to fulfill an obligation because there is no other option, it is preferable to do it with a minimum of enthusiasm and not with indolence and laziness.

Antonyms

To understand the true meaning of a word, it can be helpful to remember words with the opposite meaning, that is, the antonyms. In this sense, courtesy, kindness, pleasure or satisfaction are some of the antonyms for indifference.
