politics

definition of politicking

Human beings organize themselves in society based on a political model based on ideas, principles and customs. Those who engage in political activity can do so with two possible approaches:

1) to serve the citizens they represent or

2) with mean and mean criteria.

The term politicking refers to this second option.

The word politicking expresses popular disenchantment with the political class

In some countries there is an obvious malaise towards politics in general. The cases of corruption related to the representatives of the people, the stark struggle for power or demagoguery in speeches are aspects that cause deep disenchantment in broad sectors of the citizenry.

To express this disappointment, the term politicking is used and with it it is implied that the world of politics is ruled by illegitimate and ignoble interests (clientelism, corruption, nepotism, abuse of power ...).

In Colombia this term is used to refer to things of politics in general, but it is not Colombianism, since it is a word incorporated in the DRAE

In the colloquial language there are many phrases that highlight the deep contempt of some towards politics as a whole: "all politicians are equal", "I am not interested in politics", "it is better not to get involved in political issues" , etc. These types of statements are part of everyday conversations in different latitudes of the planet. With them, an evident rejection of politics is transmitted, but those who use them may forget that there is no other alternative to politics.

While criticism of politics is legitimate and necessary, there is a danger that the possible solutions will be even worse. It should not be forgotten that many populist movements have emerged precisely from a social climate of rejection of conventional politics.

Politics is a phenomenon as old as politics itself

In an imaginary ideal world, nations would be governed by just people, prepared and with a vocation to serve their people. In the real world there are politicians for all tastes: sincere and manipulative, with or without vocation, with totalitarian inclinations or with a democratic spirit, etc. As in any other activity, there are many ways to practice politics.

Politicking is not an exclusive phenomenon of the present, since in some way there have always been political leaders with perverse inclinations.

Plato wrote "The Republic" to denounce the political corruption of his time

The French Revolution was the consequence of social unrest due to the absolute power of Louis XVl. The suffrage movement defended the female vote and with its struggle the political machismo of its time was fought.
