definition of trivialization

The concept of trivialization is one that is used when trying to refer to the attitude of trivializing something, that is, making it trivial, superficial or unimportant. If we start from the idea that something banal is something superficial and unimportant, then we will understand that the trivialization of something is precisely transforming that thing, situation or phenomenon that is referred to into something unimportant. In many cases, the trivialization of something is understood as something negative since something that should concern people is being transformed into something banal and superficial.

When we talk about trivialization, we are talking about a process by which it is trivialized, seriousness and importance are removed from a given topic. Thus, it is common to find this process in those people who take with humor or sarcasm situations that for others are painful and that in some cases should be treated more seriously. While in some cases a certain level of banality or trivialization is allowed depending on the topics referred to, there are other situations in which the topics imply and need a lot of respect and seriousness.

In our current society, the resort to trivialize different social, political and cultural issues is very common due to the type of disorder, crisis and negative feelings that postmodernism can bring. Thus, you can easily find people or television programs that talk about the world of entertainment with the same level of interest with which they later talk about much more serious issues such as poverty or hunger. In this way, we act downplaying those issues considered important and sensitive, putting them on the same level as other much more superfluous issues. This is also encouraged by the constant amount of information and conflicts that arise in today's society that make many seek to lose sensitivity on hard and painful issues to deal with.
