The word impartial applies to refer to the one who judges or proceeds impartially. Meanwhile, impartiality is a own criterion of Justice that establishes that decisions should be made following objective criteria, without being carried away by the influences of other opinions, prejudices or for reasons that are somehow characterized as not being appropriate.
The maxim that supports this criterion is that all individuals should be treated in the same way whatever the circumstance. In some that is considered necessary for some external and objective reasons, a distinctive treatment will be accepted, however, the ideal is that in all areas of society they act according to this criterion.
Almost all the legal systems in the world present different penalties according to the type of crime in question and the seriousness that it itself reviews, but this has nothing to do with the existence of impartiality, since the differentiation in the punishments is based on to an objective criterion such as the law. The court acted with great impartiality despite pressure from the press and public opinion.
The word is also used to refer to that judgment or objective act, such as being an impartial decision.
