definition of value

Value is a quality that gives things, events or people an ethical or aesthetic estimate as appropriate in each case and that may be positive or negative.

Being an extremely important and widely studied question within the field of philosophy, there is a branch within it that deals only with your case and study: axiology. Basically this will deal with the nature and essence of the value in question.

Regarding then to its nature, the philosophical currents of the Idealism and Materialism they propose two questions that are well opposed to each other. Within Idealism there are two positions, on the one hand Objective Idealism believes that value is found outside of people or things, while for Subjective Idealism we can find value in people's consciences.

And for its part, Materialism, considers that the nature of value resides and will depend on the ability of each human being to objectively value the world.

On the other hand, the values are also used to give us a finished idea of the moral characteristics that people have. Among the most outstanding values and that most people seek to achieve as a personal goal, we can cite responsibility, humility, solidarity and piety.

The values, in addition, for the society or community in which each human being develops, lives and coexists with the rest, are usually used to teach about what actions or attitudes to follow and which ones to put aside because they harm the happy coexistence within a society or because they are widely harmful to the development of our neighbor.

At home or at school, many times, values are used as examples of social relationships so that children learn to always act with respect for the other. Surely, when someone acts consistently with any of the values that we cite above, it will be said that that person has values. Due to this question of the social convention about them, it is said that values are also very important beliefs, that a culture shares after they have arisen as a consequence of the social convention.

From this will emerge the famous scale of values that prevails in each society, which will propose the values going from the most positive to the most negative.
