definition of reforestation

Reforestation is the action by which a territory is repopulated with trees. Its purpose is environmental, since we must not forget that the forest mass is essential for the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate and is the natural habitat of plant and animal species.

If we talk about reforestation, it must be taken into account that previously there has been an opposite phenomenon, deforestation, that is, forest destruction.

With the aim of going back in time

In general terms, reforestation is an attempt to recover a natural space that has been destroyed due to various factors (industrialization, the creation of spaces dedicated to agriculture and livestock, new infrastructures, the need for housing, fires and a long etcetera. ).

The permanent fight for the protection of the world's forests

The destruction of millions of hectares of forests around the world has served to create prosperity and wealth. However, some consider that this advance is apparent, since the disappearance of the forest has caused more disadvantages than advantages. Faced with the disaster of destruction, some environmental groups are working on two lines of action: reforestation and forest preservation.

Technical considerations

The planting of trees is currently being carried out through national reforestation plans and initiatives by environmental groups or some communities that are struggling to recover their natural spaces. For this process to be successful, it is necessary to consider a series of technical aspects: the characteristics of the soil (especially its depth and texture), the herbaceous stratum or soil erosion. Another issue that must be assessed is the most suitable tree species for effective reforestation, especially its adaptation to the climatic conditions of each area.

An organized task to achieve the best results

In the strategy of reforestation of the forests, it is also necessary to organize a forest nursery system, the place where the seeds are sown with the most appropriate nutrients and in the best conditions. On the other hand, it is necessary to create a basic infrastructure in relation to a series of technical aspects in the nurseries: an irrigation system, a greenhouse, a shade house to protect the plants from the heat in summer, a seed conservation system and a procedure for maintaining nursery soil, also known as substrate.

Finally, as a preliminary step to the definitive reforestation, a cleaning of the land is carried out, which is combined with the use of herbicides to control weeds, as well as the development of a plot of the land (or plantation frame) that will depend on the its characteristics.
