definition of promiscuous

The word promiscuous is a qualifying adjective that is used to designate those people who have sex with several people at the same time or successively, whether or not they are in stable relationships with any of them. Promiscuity is an element that exists in many animal species and has to do with the act of satisfying sexual needs. However, in the case of humans, the phenomenon is much more complex because it not only has to do with the health risks that such activity can pose, but also because it collides with the social construction of monogamy.

The idea of promiscuity always supposes a certainly negative notion or description of the person who carries out this way of relating on a sexual level, regardless of whether they are male or female. Mainly, the negative notion arises from the fact of the health risks that being promiscuous can imply. In this sense, having sex with several people in succession implies greater risks of contagion of common sexually acquired diseases, as well as other more complex ones such as HIV. In addition, it also increases the risks of pregnancy which, obviously, implies long-term complications if you do not have a stable relationship with one of these people.

On the other hand, the conflict that the promiscuous person supposes also applies to the social space since although today the idea of marriage and the eternal couple is in frank crisis compared to other times, it is still in force as a social construction and of human relationships the idea of a stable couple, regardless of the marital status they maintain. Thus, a promiscuous person can generate conflicts in their environment by not allowing themselves to establish more lasting and deeper relationships, in addition to being a turning point in a couple if the person is promiscuous at the same time that they maintain a relationship with another person who does not know of their sexual behavior.
